An Independent Transmission System and Market Operator (ITSMO) in South Africa

POSTED ON: October 24, 2020 IN Workshops

In October 2019, Minister Pravin Gordhan presented the Eskom Roadmap for Eskom in a Reformed Electricity Supply Industry which details plans to restructure Eskom into three subsidiaries – Generation, Transmission and Distribution – as a precursor to the creation of an Independent Transmission Grid System and Market Operator (ITSMO) and a competitive power generation sector in South Africa.

The webinar explores issues around calls for non-discriminatory access to the transmission grid; and how both the financial system and an independent publicly-owned transmission company can facilitate a level playing field. This is seen as a important catalyst to investment, creation of new jobs, extraction of efficiencies and mitigation of risk in a diversified and competitive generation sector.
